What the warning light means
The engine management light (EML) comes on when the engine control unit records a fault. It can be something minor, such as a sensor reading out of range, or something that will cause damage if ignored. Some faults also put the vehicle into limp mode to protect the engine.
How we approach it
We connect diagnostic equipment to read stored and pending fault codes, then look at live data to see what the engine is actually doing. That narrows the cause down to a sensor, wiring, a component or a software issue, and you’ll be told what we’ve found and what it will take to fix.
Clearing a code without fixing the cause just means the light comes back, so we don’t do that.
Before a remap
A remap should only go onto a healthy engine. If your vehicle has an existing fault, it’s found and dealt with before any tuning is considered.
Questions about engine management solutions
Is it safe to drive with the engine management light on?
It depends on the fault. A steady light usually means get it checked soon; a flashing light or limp mode means stop driving hard and have it looked at as soon as possible.
Can you just clear the light?
Codes can be cleared, but without fixing the cause the light will return. The aim is to find and resolve the fault.
