Gearbox Remapping

Automatic and dual-clutch gearboxes have their own control unit with its own software. Remapping it changes when and how quickly the gearbox shifts.

What gearbox remapping is

On automatic, DSG and other dual-clutch gearboxes, a transmission control unit (TCU) decides when to change gear, how firmly, and how much torque the gearbox will accept. Like an engine map, that software is written to suit every driver and market.

A gearbox remap adjusts those settings: shift points, shift speed, how readily it kicks down, and torque limits that can otherwise hold back a remapped engine.

When it makes sense

Gearbox remapping is most often done alongside an engine remap, so the gearbox works with the extra torque instead of against it. It can also help where an automatic feels hesitant or holds gears awkwardly in everyday driving.

Not every gearbox can be remapped, and manual gearboxes have no control unit to change. Send your registration and you’ll be told what’s possible for yours.

Things to know

A healthy gearbox matters: one that’s already slipping, shuddering or overdue a fluid change should be looked at first. As with any remap, tell your insurer about the modification.

Questions about gearbox remapping

Can my manual gearbox be remapped?

No. Manual gearboxes don't have a control unit, so there is no software to change. The engine remap takes care of how a manual car drives.

Do I need a gearbox remap with an engine remap?

Not always. On some automatics the gearbox limits torque and benefits from a matching remap; on others it isn't needed. You'll be told which applies to your vehicle.
